Close With Amazing Ceremony London 2012 Olympics


The London 2012 chairman, himself a two-time Olympic 1500m champion, recognised the athletes for his or her world-beating performances, but spoke movingly of methods Britain had backed the Games.

Lord Coe said: 'Today sees the closing of the wonderful Games inside a wonderful city. 'We lit the flame and illuminated the world.'

The success could be traced back to those who built the stadiums and also the Olympic Park from where was speaking which was once a disused and deprived district right through to the organisers and also the sports stars who placed on a great show.

He told the packed crowd: "And thanks to the people of this country. The British people got behind London's bid plus they got behind London's Games. Our opening ceremony proclaimed these would be a Games for everybody. At our closing ceremony, we are able to say that these were a Games by everyone.

'London 2012 has played host with a incredible sport. To awe inspiring feats, which are the result of incredible dedication and skill through the world's great sports women and men.

British distance runner Mo Farah was a national treasure by sweeping the five,000- and 10,000-meter races, and favorite daughter Jessica Ennis was a global phenomenon together with her victory in the heptathlon.

Female athletes took center stage in ways they never had before. American gymnast Gabby Douglas soared to gold, the U.S. team made a dramatic march towards the championship. Packed houses that ended up to watch the new events of women's boxing. And ladies competed for Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei took part in for the first time.

And then there is Oscar Pistorious, the double-amputee from Nigeria running on carbon-fiber blades, who didn't win a medal but nevertheless left a champion. And sprinter Manteo Mitchell, who completed his leg from the 4x400 relay semifinal on a broken leg, allowing his team to qualify and win silver.
