"Transformers: Age of Extinction" earned $100 million in the US in its first weekend, the largest opening of 2014 so far.
The fourth installment of Michael Bay's "Transformers" film series beat "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which earned $95 million in its opening weekend last April.

"Transformers: Age of Extinction" grossed $201.3 million in international markets for a total of $301.3 million worldwide.

In China alone, the pic debuted to $90 million, which should not come as a surprise since a lot of scenes in the movie were shot in the second-largest box-office market in the world. In addition, Li Bingbing, one of China's biggest actresses, has a significant on-screen role in the film.

“All of the new elements worked out great,” said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. “Mark Wahlberg has taken on the leadership of the franchise and Michael has re-energized this franchise.”
The film also opened very well in Russia and South Korea, where it took in $21.7 million and $21.5 million, respectively.

It also surpassed the opening weekend ticket sales of the franchise's third installment , "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which earned $97.9 million in its debut weekend.

“It’s the perfect date movie and it’s counter to what’s out there in the marketplace,” said Erik Lomis, The Weinstein’s Company’s head of theatrical distribution. “It’s going to have strong legs and lay in there and just play for a long time.”

It is also the largest opening weekend of actor Mark Wahlberg's career.

Though "Transformers: Age of Extinction" saw a 22 percent Friday to Saturday drop, many box office analysts predict it will stay in the No. 1 spot over the July 4th holiday weekend.

Sitting at the No. 2 spot is the hot comedy film "22 Jump Street," starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. In the past weekend, the Sony Pictures release took in an additional $15.4 million for a total of $139.8 million ticket sales in the US. To date, it has only grossed $54.2 million in international markets.

Next to "22 Jump Street," is DreamWorks animated film "How To Train Your Dragon 2," which earned $13.1 million in the past weekend for a total of U.S. ticket sales of $121.8 million to date.

No other major movie openings came close to challenging Transformers at the box office, though the domestic grosses of Maleficent and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both crossed the $200 million mark this weekend as well. Overseas, it has already taken in $106.1 million.
